SS501 Gives 1st Concert in Osaka

The band SS501, comprising Kim Hyun-jung, Heo Young-saeng, Kim Kyu-jung, Park Jung-min and Kim Hyung-jun, gave its first concert in Osaka, Japan on September 16 as the first step toward establishing its presence in the Japanese market.

Performing in front of an audience of some 2,700 people, the band sang 15 songs over two hours, including its hit songs “Fighter” and “Fashion” and Westlife’s “My Love.” The band changed costumes five times in line with the theme of its concert, “Step Up,” showing off exquisite fashion styles along with staging a mature performance. The members of the band also staged a dance battle for their Japanese fans and sang two songs in Japanese, captivating their fans’ hearts.

Shin Hyeon Joon, to capture Korea and Japan simultaneously with the movie 'Gamun' series

Hallyu Star Shin Hyeon Joon is going to star in 'Gamun eui Buhwal (Marrying the Mafia III)' which opens in Korea, and 'Gamunui Wigi (Marrying the Mafia II)' in Japan.

Shin Hyeon Joon left for Japan on the 13th at 4:40pm for a three day trip during which he will conduct interviews with Japanese press, appear as a guest on television shows as well as attend a special premiere for the promotion of 'Gamunui Wigi (Marrying the Mafia II).'

Cho Deok Hyeon of Shin Hyeon Joon's agency Olive9 commented, "300 people were invited to the special premiere of 'Gamunui Wigi (Marrying the Mafia II)' but more than 3,000 people had inquired to attend, once again surprising us with Shin Hyeon Joon's popularity."

Originators of Korean Wave Still Loved in Japan

Four Korean actors who are considered the originators of the Korean Wave, or Korean pop culture craze, have been found to still be the favorites among Japanese fans.

In its internet edition on Monday, the Japanese entertainment magazine Oricon Style announced the results of its survey of Japanese people between their teens and 40s that asked, “Who is your favorite Korean actor and actress?” The announcement came in the wake of the news that the recent Korean movie “The Host” is drawing global attention.

Bae Yong-joon, who stole the hearts of Japanese women with his role in “Winter Sonata,” was chosen as the most popular Korean male star. He was praised for his sincere and caring attitude toward his fans and his "killer" smile. Following Bae were Jang Dong-kun, whose tough image was cited as his charm, Lee Byung-hyun and Won Bin.

Japanese Fans Flock to See Song Seung-heon

Thousands of Japanese fans of actor Song Seung-heon are expected to visit Korea to see their favorite hallyu star, who will be discharged from military service November 15. Reservations for Korea-bound flights from Japan are almost filled up for the given period.

Song will hold a fan meeting at the Olympic Park in Seoul on November 18 and 19. Some 9,000 foriegn fans of the actor who were lucky to obtain tickets to the meetings--winning a competition with odds of one in ten--will arrive in Korea at least a day early to see Song as soon as possible.

The majority of Song's fans are from Japan.

Ryu Si-won’s Concert DVD Takes 2nd Spot on HMV Chart

The popularity of hallyu star Ryu Si-won is showing no signs of abating in Japan.

Ryu’s DVD of his Japan Live Tour 2006 recently leaped to the second spot of the DVD booking chart of Japan’s largest record company, HMV.

The actor/singer toured seven Japanese nations beginning June 13, with all his concerts being sold out, attesting to Ryu's unrivaled popularity in Japan. The singer’s Japanese fans hope to relive happy memories of Ryu’s concerts by watching the DVD, which consists of two discs and contains 21 tracks and the making-of film.

The DVD will go on sale in Japan November 8.

Actor Lee Beom-soo to Make Promotional Visit to Japan

Korean actor Lee Beom-soo will make a four-day, five-night visit to Japan to promote his movie “Superstar Gam Sa-yong,” which will be released in the island country soon.

Lee will hold press conferences and interviews in Japan from Friday to next Tuesday.

Released in 2004 in Korea, the movie features the story of the pro baseball pitcher “Gam Sa-yong” who played with the Sami Superstars and was called to take the mound only when his team was losing. The touching movie portrays Gam’s unyielding efforts to realize his dreams.

Distributed by IMX, the movie will be released in Japan on Saturday. The comic film about dynamic pro baseball games is expected to succeed in Japan, where pro baseball is very popular. Lee will directly express his gratitude to fans in Tokyo and Osaka on Saturday and Sunday.

As Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe looks ever more likely to replace Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi later this month, the spotlight is moving toward his wife Akie Abe (44).

Akie Abe is known to be an avid Korean Wave fan, and in keeping with her stature is a heroine with a big heart. But unlike her husband, who never lets alcohol cross his lips, Akie Abe is fond of a drop and is known for throwing parties and attending gatherings, building the human network for her husband.

Akie Abe is the oldest daughter of Akio Matsuzaki, the former president of Japan‘s leading confectioner Morinaga & Co, and a graduate of the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo. She worked for a time at the country’s no. 1 advertising firm Dentsu and in 1987 married Shinzo Abe. Around the same time, Abe’s elder brother Hironobu Abe married a daughter of the president of Ushio Denki, a major Japanese firm, giving rise to talk that the marriage was politically motivated. In the 1990s, Akie Abe worked as a FM Radio DJ in her husband's hometown of Shimonoseki.

Kim Jung-hoon to Release Album in Japan

Kim Jung-hoon, a member of the male duet UN who has made a successful debut as an actor on the MBC TV drama “Royal Palace,” will release his first solo album in Japan in October.

A person from Kim’s agency said August 4 that Kim has decided to release an album in Japan after receiving an offer from a Japanese record company, but will not perform the songs from the upcoming album in Korea. He also added that the album will contain mostly ballads targeting a wide audience that feature outstanding melodies.

Kim will visit Japan August 6 to prepare for the release of the album.

Kong Yoo to Hold Fan Meetings in Japan

Actor Kong Yoo will hold a news conference and a fan meeting in Tokyo on August 5 and another fan meeting in Osaka on August 6.

The actor’s agency said Kong has decided to meet with his Japanese fans at their own request and will meet with some 1,700 fans in Tokyo and Osaka. Kong’s popularity rose in Japan for his role in the TV drama “Hardtack Teacher and Star Candy,” which aired on Japan’s KNTV twice.

"I look forward to meeting my Japanese fans. I’ve been practicing singing and honing my Japanese-language skills to communicate with my fans in Japan," said Kong.

Kong will hold a fan meeting in Korea on August 20 with his official fan club “YOO&I.”
