Hallyu star Bae Yong-jun was nominated for a Cultural Medal and, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the actor's eligibility is currently under review by the State Council and president.

The Ministry of Culture has recognized Bae Yong-jun's role in introducing Korea's popular culture to the world through the Hallyu phenomenon following the success of his TV drama "Winter Sonata." Bae is one of 25 nominees for the Cultural Medal.

If Bae Yong-jun is chosen as the recipient of the honorable medal, he will receive the Cultural Medal at the "2008 Culture Day" event held at the Arts Center on October 18th in Cheongju, North Chungcheong province.

Established in 2004, the Cultural Medal is a government commendation awarded to figures whose invaluable efforts have paved the way in an area of culture.

Actress Lee Young-ae was the recipient of the 2007 Cultural Medal for her cultural influence on the Hallyu phenomenon through the TV drama "Jewel in the Palace."

Shinhwa member Shin Hye-sung, will be singing the main theme song "Tetris Togethe," for the popular video game "Tetris."

NHN game portal, Han Game, has cooperated with The Tetris Company for the past two years on a new version of Tetris, which will be released to the public at the end of this month.

The Tetris official website features video footage of Shin recording the theme song.

Shin is currently working on promotions for "Because It's You," the title track to his third album. He is also preparing for his October 18th concert at the Olympic Park, entitled "2008 SHS Live Tour Side 1-Live and Let Live in Seoul." In November, his Asia tour will continue through Japan and China.

"Winter Sonata" Adapted from TV Drama to Movie

The Korean TV drama "Winter Sonata," which led the Hallyu phenomenon throughout Japan, will be adapted into a movie production, along with another "seasonal" serial, "Autumn in My Heart."

Culture Cap Media holds the movie rights to "Winter Sonata," and its CEO, Choi Sun-sik, released a press statement on the 8th announcing the joint investment venture in the production of the film with Kara & Rich Holdings.

Kara & Rich Holdings is an investment company with a majority of Japanese and Singaporean investors. The company has an investment contract with an entertainment firm in Japan that will work alongside Culture Cap Media.

According to Culture Cap Media, the stars of "Winter Sonata," Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-woo, will not be participating in the movie adaptation.

"We are hoping to give a refreshing new feel to the movie," the company stated. "After the movie version of 'Winter Sonata,' we will work with Kara & Rich Holdings on the production of the adaptation of 'Autumn in My Heart' as well."

Actor Ryu Shi-won, who has been at the forefront of promoting Korean tourism overseas, will receive an award for outstanding achievement from President Lee Myung-bak at the "Tourism Day" ceremony. Ryu's management agency R's Company said the ceremony will take place at the Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, Seoul on October 14.

Ryu plans to release his 8th single album in Japan on October 15 and hold a solo concert at the Tokyo Dome for two days from December 23.

BoA's U.S. Debut Song to be Distributed to 30 Countries

BoA's U.S. debut song "Eat You Up" will be unveiled to the world through some 300 websites in 30 countries around the world. BoA's management agency SM Entertainment said the single will be released globally on October 21. In the United States, the song will be introduced on various websites including I-Tunes, Amazon, I-Music and MySpace. It will also be distributed as a mobile phone ringtone through AT&T and T-Mobile.

The song will be distributed in Korea starting October 22 through major music portals including Melon, Dosirak and Cyworld. The song will also be distributed to some 30 countries including China, Japan, Thailand, England, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

Through the website of his fan club, which opened on October 1, Andy said he was excited to finally have a medium through which he could meet his Japanese fans. Japan's largest commercial satellite channel Sky Perfect TV will hold a two-month-long special event during which it will feature films and dramas starring Korean actor Lee Byeong-heon. The event will begin this month.

Prior to the event launch, Sky Perfect TV produced and aired four different versions of a TV ad promoting the event. During the "Lee Byeong-heon Festival" period, the channel will air some of the actor's major works including "Addiction," "Once in a Summer," "Lament," "A Bittersweet Life," "Bungee Jumping of their Own," "Happy Together" and the drama series "All In."

'Iljimae' to Air in Japan Starting November

"Iljimae," a popular drama series on SBS which recorded an average viewer rating of 31.4%, will be aired in Japan. The drama series stars popular actor Lee Jun-ki.

The satellite channel So-net TV, which specializes in introducing Hallyu drama series through "Asia Dramatic TV," plans to air Iljimae in Japan starting November 24. "Mawang," a popular drama series that was recently remade in Japan, as well as "Lobbyist" and "Gyeongseong Gibang Movie Theater" will also be aired in Japan.

So-net TV opened an official website for Iljimae on October 10. It also plans to air a special documentary on the drama series on November 15.

Actress Bae Doo-na Cast in Koreeda's New Film

Actress Bae Doo-na has been cast as the heroine in world-renowned Japanese film director Hirokazu Koreeda's upcoming film. Koreeda, who is currently visiting the Pusan International Film Festival with his latest work "Aruitemo Aruitemo," told a magazine jointly published by Cine 21 and Hollywood Report magazines, that he has cast Bae as the heroine of his upcoming fantasy melodrama.

The film director explained that his new film is about a non-human entity that learns to open up to people, learn their language and learns to love. He also added that he is a huge fan of the Korean actress. It will be Bae's second role in a Japanese film since "Linda Linda Linda," a 2004 film directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita.

Koreeda became widely acknowleged through his 2004 film "Nobody Knows" which won an award for the Best Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Barunson Entertainment said details of the film, including the title, have yet to be confirmed. The film shoot will begin in December.

Actor Kwon Sang-woo and Son Tae-young tied the knot at the Shilla Hotel in Jangchung-dong, Seoul, on September 28. 350 guests attended the much talked-about event.

The couple's wedding ceremony was hosted by KBS announcer Yoon In-gu and officiated by Grand National Party lawmaker Joo Ho-young. Singer Jo Sung-mo and Son's brother-in-law and pianist Yiruma each performed nuptial songs. The newlyweds will move into Kwon's apartment in Samsung-dong, Seoul.

Kwon made his acting debut in 2001 through the MBC drama series "Delectable Proposal." He rose to stardom through the 2003 film "My Tutor Friend" and starred in numerous hit films including "Spirit of Jeet Kun Do" and "Running Wild." He also starred opposite Choi Ji-woo in the SBS drama series "Stairway to Heaven."

Meanwhile, Son made her debut as a TV entertainer in 2000 after she finished second runner-up at the 2000 Miss Korea beauty pageant. She also starred in numerous TV drama series including "100 Roses" and "I Am Sam" as well as films such as "Sad Movie" and "Gyeongeui Line."
