Prosecutors are looking into allegations by actor Kwon Sang-woo that he was threatened by Kim Tae-chon, the godfather of the Sobang-pa crime gang. The actor’s agency says the actor was planning a fan meeting in Japan with an acquaintance, but when things failed to work out smoothly the acquaintance asked Kim to threaten the actor on his behalf. The gangster heard from the unnamed acquaintance about the difficulties with the project and then rang Kwon threatening him and asking “Why don’t you keep your promises?”

Kwon Sang-woo Blasts Japanese Media

Hallyu star Kwon Sang-woo has strongly criticized Japanese media reports disparaging South Korean celebrities.

Kwon’s agency said October 8 that the Japanese sports daily Tokyo Sports published yet another negative story about the actor on October 3, saying that Kwon was recently seen drunk after a party. The newspaper also published a humiliating story about Kwon last year by quoting the CEO of KSJ, a store that deals with Japanese products.

Orchid in Singapore Named after Kwon Sang-woo

An orchid at the National Orchid Garden in Singapore has been named after actor Kwon Sang-woo, who attended the naming ceremony on September 4.

Kwon received a naming certificate from the Singaporean tourism minister and attached a label with his name to a violet orchid of a new species.

The naming ceremony was originally planned to be opened to 100 fans, but more than one thousand fans from Asian countries flocked to the venue to see their favorite actor.

Singapore continually develops new species of orchids, its national flower, and holds orchid naming ceremonies every time special guests visit the country. So far, dignitaries after whom orchids have been named include former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and U.S. First Lady Laura Bush.

Kwon Sang-woo to Give His Name to S’pore Orchid

The hugely popular Korean actor Kwon Sang-woo, who is traveling to Singapore and Indonesia to meet his fans there, joins Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana in having an orchid hybrid named after him in the city state, an honor usually reserved for guests of state. Cosmetics maker TheFACEshop says Kwon will be visiting the two countries on Sept. 1-5. The actor, who has been the face of TheFACEshop for three years, will hold press conferences and leave his handprints in cement in Singapore and Jakarta as well as taking part in fan meet-n-greets. Most importantly, an Orchid Naming Ceremony will add “Kwon Sang-woo” to Singapore’s National Orchid Garden.

Korean Wave star Kwon Sang-woo has told to a Japanese film magazine he does not plan to get married any time soon. Ahead of the Japanese release of his film "Youth Comic," the actor gave a promotional interview to Cinema Today magazine on his goals as he heads into his thirties. "It's not that I want to put work before marriage, but there just aren't any plans," he is quoted as saying. "I want to give better performances, and I am making better work." He confessed to feeling more comfortable now he is 30. “I have a responsibility as an actor, and I have a little more leeway," he said.

Kwon, who has previously admitted to dreams of appearing in a Japanese soap, named the actor Toru Nakamura, who has appeared in Korean movies, and Takeshi Kaneshiro as two stars he would like to work with. The interviewer swooned over Kwon’s smooth style. "Throughout the interview, he looked me straight in the eye and answered in a gentle and respectful voice, exuding the charm that has captured the hearts not just of Korean women but of Japanese women as well," Cinema Today gushed.

Kwon Sang-woo Visits Japan for Movie Premiere

Actor Kwon Sang-woo has visited Japan for the premiere of his latest movie “Spring of Life Comic.“

The Japanese daily Sports Hochi reported August 10 that Kwon, a top star in Japan, has visited Tokyo to attend the premiere of his new movie that opens across Japan on August 19, and that the movie topped the Korean box-office for two consecutive weeks when it opened in Korea in March.

When Kwon appeared at the premiere venue, his fans began singing him a birthday song to congratulate him for his birthday, which falls on August 5. In response, the impressed actor said every time he visits Japan he feels like it’s his birthday.
